The requirements for outdoor signage are similar to that for regular signage, which are similar to those of drapery, curtains and other vertically hung textiles.
The following standards apply:
Standard |
Description |
BS 5867-2:2008 |

EN 13772:2011 |
Textiles and textile products - Burning behaviour - Curtains and drapes - Measurement of flame spread of vertically oriented specimens with large ignition source |
EN ISO 6941:2003 |
Textile fabrics — Burning behaviour — Measurement of flame spread properties of vertically oriented specimens |
IMO FTP Code 2010 Part 7 |

In addition, you may wish to make sure your fabric is UV resistant and weather resistant, depending on the intended length of use, size and placement.
The material should be able to withstand the elements sufficiently so that its safety is not compromised, e.g. mounting point failure causing the signage to whip around in adverse weather, potentially injuring someone.
The use of metal grommets in the corners and edges of coated fabrics is usually sufficient. Always follow the manufacturer guidelines for the safe use of these products.
